Domain Names were invented to make the internet more user friendly. The Domain Name System (DNS) is like an electronic phone book. You type in a Domain Name and the internet translates this into a number (IP Address) that computers understand. The IP address is like a worldwide, unique phone number.

What is a URL? The "Universal Resource Locator" name is your Domain Name, prefixed with a service descriptor. The most common prefix is for the World Wide Web service, or WWW. That's why to to see this web site you typed WWW.webstartdesign.com.au Actually the full URL is http://www.webstartdesign.com.au but many browsers don't require you to type the "http://" bit.

.COM.AU Domain Names are administered in Australia by AUDA www.auDA.org.au
